About Us

FishyBites is a site for collecting much-needed information about Southern Hemisphere lamprey feeding preferences. Scientists currently do not know what Southern Hemisphere lamprey eat when they are in the ocean. We need the help of citizen scientists and local observers to learn more about these fascinating and mysterious fish!

The reports of FishyBites observers will be used to solve large important questions such as 1. What do Southern Hemisphere lamprey feed on when they are in the ocean? and 2. How does the lamprey diet dictate how they are distributed in the Southern Hemisphere? The answers to these questions will be used by natural resource managers and conservationists to better their management strategies and better protect the species. This protection is particularly important now since lamprey numbers are decreasing due to habitat alteration and disease.

Who else has been bitten?

The fish and mammals that we believe have been bitten by lamprey in the Southern Hemisphere are listed below.

After a FISHYBites observer logs (see "Log it!" tab at the top of this page) their observation of a bite mark, their observation will be reviewed by the FishyBites team. After the team reviews the observation, it will be added to the list below.

Animals that have likely been bitten:

  • Brown trout, species = Salmo trutta.

  • Slender tuna, Allothunnus fallai

  • Sperm whale, Physeter macrocephalus

  • Southern blue whiting (Micromesistius australis)

  • Patagonian toothfish (Dissostichus eleginoides)
